Google and Shopify Turned On AI Checkout by Default. Google Analytics Can't See Those Sales.
Direct checkout inside Google AI Mode, Gemini, Meta and Microsoft Copilot is on by default for eligible Shopify stores, and Google Analytics doesn't see those orders. Decide channel by channel before Black Friday.

This holiday season, more of your store's sales will close inside AI chats, where Google Analytics can't see them. On Oct. 7, 2026, Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google's Merchant Center hub for checkout inside AI Mode and Gemini was gradually rolling out in the US. Eligible US Shopify stores got that checkout in September, switched on by default, so if you run one, shoppers may already be buying from you without loading your site.
Decide channel by channel before Black Friday on Nov. 27. Stay findable in every AI channel. Allow checkout inside a channel only where the order and the return still come back to you, and look again if Shopify turns on the fee its terms allow. Then grade the season on orders and revenue by sales channel.
TL;DR
- Direct checkout inside Google AI Mode, Gemini, Meta and Microsoft Copilot is on by default for eligible Shopify stores, while ChatGPT still sends shoppers to your own checkout.
- Google Analytics and custom pixels don't fire on those orders, and Shopify reset its session baseline on Sept. 21, 2026, so judge the holidays on orders and revenue by channel.
- Our bet: by June 30, 2027, Shopify will charge a per-order fee on in-channel checkout for at least one of Google, Meta or Microsoft Copilot.
Key fact: Shopify's Google AI Mode and Gemini help page (read Oct. 8, 2026) says direct checkout is on by default for eligible US stores, and that Google Analytics and custom pixels won't fire on it.
What did Google and Shopify switch on?
Shopify's agentic storefronts page (read Oct. 8, 2026) says the feature is active by default for eligible stores, and its default setting, "Allow Shopify to manage for me," keeps every channel active and enrolls you in new ones automatically.
On Sept. 22, 2026, Search Engine Roundtable published Google's email telling Shopify merchants their store "was matched to your Merchant Center, enabling native checkout" in AI Mode and Gemini. Nobody had to opt in. Google's Sept. 16, 2026 holiday post claims its Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) already powers direct checkout for hundreds of thousands of brands and retailers.
Shopify's pages for Meta and Microsoft Copilot say direct checkout is on by default there too (we covered Meta's Muse agent on Oct. 5). ChatGPT is the exception: its shoppers finish on your own checkout. Shopify's terms and Google's UCP help page both say you stay the seller of record, so the return and the refund are still yours.
Why does Google Analytics miss these sales?
On Google, Meta and Copilot direct checkout, Shopify says only server-to-server pixels fire. The order still lands in your Shopify admin, with sales reports for each AI channel, but GA4 and custom-pixel tools won't record it.
Shopify's Sept. 21, 2026 changelog also says its default sessions view now focuses on human visitors, so treat session metrics as a new baseline (orders and sales aren't affected).
Adobe, which sells analytics software, forecast on Sept. 28, 2026 that clicks from AI tools to US retail sites will rise 130% year over year from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31, with Thanksgiving up 159%. In July, Adobe measured 62% year-over-year growth in AI referrals, Digital Commerce 360 reported on Aug. 19, 2026. AI agents are a second audience for your site, as we wrote on Sept. 29, and some will now buy without visiting.
What does Shopify's fee clause mean?
Shopify's Agentic Storefronts terms have let it charge a fee on certain AI channels since at least the July 7, 2026 version (the current one is dated Oct. 6). Section 6.1 says the fee comes on top of what you already pay, shows up in your Shopify Admin and may come with a promotional period of discounted or waived fees. Disable a channel after that period ends and you won't get another one when you re-enable it.
As of Oct. 8, Shopify's Google, Meta, Copilot and ChatGPT pages all say there's no fee beyond standard payment processing. Check your admin before Black Friday anyway, and have whoever reviews your contracts read section 6.
Should you turn AI checkout off?
Not across the board. Discovery is free reach, while in-chat checkout costs you browser-side tracking. We'd set each channel like this.
| Channel or setting | What to do |
|---|---|
| Allow Shopify to manage for me | Turn off, then choose each channel |
| ChatGPT | Leave on (buyers finish on your checkout) |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Keep checkout if returns and reporting work |
| Meta and Microsoft Copilot | Check each channel's sales report first |
| Custom or WooCommerce store | Fix your Merchant Center feed first |
What about stores that are not on Shopify?
Google's hub onboarding page (read Oct. 8, 2026) says you build to UCP first, then fill out an interest form, and its UCP checkout page says it's open to select merchants. We found no official WooCommerce UCP release as of Oct. 8. The stores we build are custom, so we're on this side too.
This season's move is a clean product feed. Google's Sept. 16 post says holiday success relies on an accurate feed and calls its AI performance insights report generally available in the US. Treat UCP checkout as a 2027 build and part of the custom ecommerce vs. Shopify decision.
How can you check your setup in 10 minutes?
Decide by mid-November, because Shopify says turning off catalog sharing can take up to 7 days.
- On Shopify, open Sales channels > Agentic. Note whether "Allow Shopify to manage for me" is on, which channels have direct checkout on, and any fee or promotional period listed.
- Compare the last 30 days of Agentic sales reports with the purchases GA4 credits to AI referrers. The gap is roughly your direct-checkout sales, the orders GA4 never sees.
- Mark Sept. 21 in your reports before you compare sessions or conversion rate with last year.
- Not on Shopify? In Merchant Center, look for disapproved or limited products, confirm your return policy and shipping are filled in, and open the AI performance insights report.
- Check that your last order-confirmation email lists the item, variant, price and a return link. It's your record if a buyer disputes an agent-placed order, so ask your processor or lawyer how those get handled.
Where is this headed?
- Our bet: by Jan. 31, 2027, Shopify will mark orders that browser agents complete through its WebMCP checkout tools as agent-placed in the admin. Shopify opened checkout to browser agents through WebMCP, TechCrunch reported on Sept. 28, 2026, and merchants will need to tell those orders apart in a dispute.
- We think Shopify will charge a per-order fee on in-channel checkout for at least one of Google, Meta or Microsoft Copilot by June 30, 2027. All of them are free as of Oct. 8, and the terms have reserved the right since at least July.
- By June 30, 2027, we expect WooCommerce to ship or officially endorse native UCP support, because its merchants will ask why Shopify stores can sell inside Google's AI and theirs can't.
